Support funding, instead, of organizations that provide comprehensive health care for women.

WASHINGTON, DC – Democrats For Life of America is urging Senator Bob Casey, Jr. of Pennsylvania to reconsider his support for Planned Parenthood, the nation’s largest abortion provider. The profitable $1.2 billion-per-year organization performed more than 300,000 abortions last year. It is currently under investigation for selling body parts, including hearts, lungs and livers, of children whom they have aborted.

“As supporters of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), we share Senator Casey’s commitment to provide access to comprehensive health care, including access to family planning,” said Kristen Day, executive director of Democrats For Life of America. “But the suggestion that Planned Parenthood is the number-one one health care provider for women is a gross misrepresentation.”

There are approximately 158 million women in the U.S.  While Planned Parenthood claims to be the leading health care provider for women, it does not provide comprehensive health care services for women, nor is it the leading provider. Planned Parenthood serves between 1 percent and 2 percentof American women. The primary services offered by Planned Parenthood are STD tests and contraception, which together constitute 76 percent of services. Prenatal support is listed as less than 1 percent. (Source: Planned Parenthood’s 2014 Annual Report.) Women’s health care is complex and goes well beyond access to contraception, STD tests, or abortion. The top health concerns for women include heart disease, diabetes, and cancer—none of which Planned Parenthood addresses in its activities.

“Senator Casey has been a leading advocate for pregnant women and new mothers. We were proud to work with him to pass the Pregnancy Assistance Fund because more support to carry a child to term is a key component to lowering the abortion rate,” said Day. “However, aligning with Planned Parenthood is akin to supporting abortion, given the organization’s increasing market share in the abortion industry. There are a multitude of non-violent health care alternatives that opponents of abortion and supporters of Title X funds can and should support.”

There are more than 13,000 health care clinics that provide comprehensive health care for women and families—vastly surpassing Planned Parenthood’s 650 clinics. In each of 31 states, there are ten or fewer Planned Parenthood clinics. There are more Community Health Centers (CHCs) in California alone than the total number of Planned Parenthood clinics nationwide. The ACA, supported by Senator Casey and DFLA, provided funding to expand the number of CHCs. Since 2010, more than 700 new facilities have been built to provide comprehensive services to women and families. The CHCs provide more complete health services than Planned Parenthood, including mammograms and prenatal care. They also provide contraception. CHCs serve more than 23 million individuals and families, regardless of ability to pay. Women in rural areas, in particular, are more likely to have access to a Community Health Center, given that the centers target communities in need. Planned Parenthood facilities tend to be located in or near high-populated cities, such as Los Angeles and Chicago.

Senator Casey, like most Americans, has been given inaccurate information about the scope of health care services provided by Planned Parenthood,” said Day. “We now know the truth. It’s time to look out for the best interests of women and their children by ensuring that federal funding is allocated to organizations that provide comprehensive health care for women.”

Eight videos have been released showing Planned Parenthood doctors discussing selling or “donating for a fee” human body parts from aborted fetuses. In one video, a Planned Parenthood doctor discusses changing the kind of abortion procedure the organization performs so as to “preserve the specimen” or prevent crushing the organs, such as the liver or heart. The most recent video includes testimony about harvesting organs from a living fetus. Although Planned Parenthood denies selling body parts for profit, the questions and doubts about the legality and medical ethics surrounding this practice are continuing to escalate. The very fact that organs can be harvested belies the myth that abortions are performed on “blobs of tissue.”

“The Planned Parenthood videos clearly portray the humanity of the unborn and have served as a wake-up call to Americans, rallying them to take to the streets in huge numbers to speak out,” said Day. “Even the abortion doctor who exclaims, ‘It’s another boy’ recognizes that humanity. Pro-life Democratic Senator Casey should be on the forefront of this battle, neither defending nor advocating for the nation’s largest abortion business. Democrats don’t defend corporate welfare, particularly when that corporation is harming our most vulnerable children.”

Democrats Urge Support for Potential Displaced Planned Parenthood Patients

WASHINGTON, DC – Democrats For Life of America encourages supportive outreach to patients who believe that they may lose access to health care services if Planned Parenthood closes its doors. Since the Center for Medical Progress released its videos of Planned Parenthood officials allegedly haggling over payments for body parts of aborted babies, three states have withdrawn funding for the organization.

"We are concerned about the perception that there are no other health care facilities to address the needs of Planned Parenthood patients should it choose to shut its doors," said Kristen Day, executive director of Democrats For Life of America. "We support the transfer of funds to facilities that do not perform abortions, so now we must facilitate the transfer of patients."

DFLA is urging state and local governments to provide a list of alternative facilities that take Medicaid patients or offer free or reduced-price health care. In Louisiana, there are two Planned Parenthood abortion clinics, one in New Orleans and the other in Baton Rouge, yet there are more than twenty Community Health Centers in New Orleans and almost ten in Baton Rouge that offer full-service health care for families. Alabama’s Planned Parenthood clinics are similarly located in urban areas, Birmingham and Mobile, where numerous community clinics would be able to supply full-service health care. In New Hampshire, there are five Planned Parenthood clinics that would be affected.

"As supporters of the Affordable Care Act, we would like to see more Americans have access to health care, not fewer. That is why we should be vigilant in ensuring that families have access to information about available alternatives," said Day. "We call on any governor who defunds Planned Parenthood to also support the health care needs of women and families."

Nationwide, there are more than 9,000 Community Health Centers and fewer than 700 Planned Parenthood clinics. The Community Health Centers serve more than 21 million people per year and provide a full array of health care services. Also, they received $11 billion under the ACA to prepare for an expected increase in the number of patients, so they should be able to handle the load.

"While we applaud efforts to deny governmental funding of Planned Parenthood for its role in providing abortions,” said Day, "we urge any state that is considering defunding Planned Parenthood to re-channel those funds to desperately needed health care for at-risk women and infants. Cutting funds would harm families, but re-channeling funds, coupled with informational outreach on alternatives, may result in more families served."

DFLA Supports Defunding Planned Parenthood

WASHINGTON, DC – Democrats For Life of America (DFLA) urges Congress to reallocate federal funding for women's health services from Planned Parenthood to Community Health Centers (CHCs), which are more accessible anddo more extensive preventive care, including mammograms. Planned Parenthood, a profitable $1.2 billion-per-year corporation, is under investigation for selling body parts, including hearts, lungs and livers, of aborted children.

“Whether or not Planned Parenthood is engaging in an illegal selling of body parts, the videos highlight what Americans have too long been asked to ignore – the humanity of the unborn and the reality that abortion ends a life,” said Kristen Day, executive director of Democrats For Life of America. “The videos suggest that the procedure can be or is modified to accommodate not the medical needs of the woman, but the ability to harvest the unborn child’s organs. It is time to recognizethe life in the womb and to provide more support and more options to pregnant women.”

Two videos have been released showing a Planned Parenthood executive discussing selling or “donating for a fee” human body parts from aborted fetuses. In both videos, the Planned Parenthood representative discussed changing the kind of abortion procedure they do to “preserve the specimen” or prevent crushing the organs, such as the liver or heart. The process puts the opportunity for revenue over women’s health. Although Planned Parenthood denies selling body parts for profit, the questions and doubts about legality surrounding this practice are continuing to escalate. The very fact that organs can be harvested belies the myth that abortions are performed on “blobs of tissue.”

“Currently, we are providing federal dollars to an organization that is in a position to influence a woman to choose abortion and then the organization can profit from her decision,” said Day. “Most Americans are opposed to taxpayer funding of abortion, and decades-old law supports that notion. There needs to be a complete separation between one organization that counsels women seeking abortion and another organization that harvests the organs. This practice invites deception and corruption.”

The potential for abuse with counseling a patient to abort her childand then selling the child's body parts for profit has been a concern for decades. There was a moratorium on fetal tissue research in the 1980s over concern that the tissue was harvested from aborted human beings. Eight states and the U.S. Congress are now investigating Planned Parenthood for wrongdoing.

“Supporters of Planned Parenthood have expressed concern that women will not have access to medical care. We share that concern, which is why we are calling on Congress to reallocate the funding to Community Health Centers,” said Day.”  There are 9,000 Community Health Center sites across the country; almost every single Congressional district has at least one.  They vastly outnumber the 700 Planned Parenthood facilities, and they provide fuller services for families. We want to ensure that women still have access to the services and support they need.”

The CHCs provide more complete health services than Planned Parenthood, including mammograms. They do not perform abortions, and they serve more than 23 million individuals, regardless of ability to pay. Women in rural areas, in particular, are more likely to have access to a Community Health Center, given that the centers target communities in need. Planned Parenthood facilities tend to be located in or near high-populated cities, such as Los Angeles and Chicago.

Pro-Life Democrats Oppose the Death Penalty

Posted in Commentary

As pro-life Democrats, we believe that every person has worth and dignity and that every life has value.  This is true not just of the innocent child in the womb, but even of those who have committed unspeakable crimes.  The sanctity of human life is something that cannot be forfeited.

Democrats for Life of America is shaped by this consistent commitment to life—an approach we like to call whole life—and we believe that this consistency is vital to ending the culture of violence that permeates our society and to building a culture of life.

Of course, there is no consensus among pro-life Democrats when it comes to the death penalty and how we, as a society, should respond to brutal crimes and assaults on human dignity and life. For those who are pro-life, defending the life of an unborn child is quite obviously necessary, as the child is innocent and defenseless.  But what about those who are not innocent and whose acts of violence have violated the sanctity of life?

Most of us who are whole life have come to believe that the death penalty is not the right response.  Taking a human life to show the value of human life seems unlikely to work, and the reality is that we know that it does not work:  The death penalty is no more effective as a deterrent than life in prison without the possibility of parole.  To take a life needlessly cannot be reconciled with our consistent commitment to life.

Pro-Life Democrats Urge Inclusion of Paid Family Leave with 20-Week Ban

Posted in Press Releases

WASHINGTON, DC – Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) introduced the Senate companion bill to the House-passed Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act on June 11, 2015.  The bill would prohibit abortion after 20 weeks.  Democrats For Life of America (DFLA) supports the legislation but urges inclusion of a comprehensive package to assist women.

“For any chance of becoming law, we believe that any 20-week ban must be paired with comprehensive support for women, including referrals to perinatal hospice when advisable, paid family leave, and increased funding for programs that will help pregnant women carry their children to term,” said Kristen Day, executive director of DFLA. “The Senate needs to recognize that late-term abortions are never necessary, and providing more support for pregnant women will make late-term abortions obsolete.”

Writing for the American Association of Pro-life Obstetricians & Gynecologists, Dr. Mary Davenport dispelled the fabrication that late-term abortions are necessary.  Dr. Davenport wrote, “There is always a life-affirming way to care for mother and baby, no matter how bleak the prognosis.  The elimination of late-term abortion would not create a void in medical care, but would instead result in a more humane world in which vulnerable humans would be treated with the dignity and respect that they deserve.”

Most late-term abortions are performed on healthy babies and healthy mothers.  Most of the mothers are poor and either did not have the money for an earlier abortion or did not know they were pregnant.  A very small percentage choose abortion for fetal anomaly.  Furthermore, women who receive support – in the form of parenting classes, job training, diapers, and a lifeline – are more likely to choose life.

"The abortion rate is on the decline because more women now can receive prenatal care, because of the passage of the Pregnant Women Support Act, and because of more awareness about the reality of life in the womb through ultrasound and education," said Day.  "If we want this trend to continue, more support must be paired with more restrictions."

The abortion rate has decreased in almost every state since 2010, following the passage of the Affordable Care Act, which prohibited the classification of pregnancy as a pre-existing condition.  The Act also contained DFLA’s Pregnant Women Support Act, including the Pregnancy Assistance Fund, introduced by Senator Bob Casey (D-PA).  The Fund provided grants to 17 states to help women in crisis pregnancies fulfill the option to carry their babies to term instead of ending their pregnancies in abortion.  Passage of legislation to ban late-term abortions, increased contraception use, and requiring ultrasounds prior to abortion have also worked toward lowering the abortion rate.

“We must ensure that women and families are given every opportunity to support this new life,” said Day.  “We propose the addition of several amendments to provide help to families, whether they receive a prenatal diagnosis or they are feeling financial pressure to abortion.”

Democrats For Life of America is proposing that the following amendments be added to the 20-week ban legislation:

·         Perinatal Hospice referral to help parents with a prenatal diagnosis;
·         Family and Medical Insurance Leave Act; and the
·         Pregnancy Assistance Fund Expansion Act.
