Democrats For Life of America (DFLA) urges U.S Senator Bob Casey (D-PA) to reconsider his support for the abortion-rights group EMILY's List. Senator Casey attended an annual fundraising gala for EMILY's List last Thursday. The gala celebrated the victories of putting more pro-choice women in office, and EMILY's List will use the fundraising proceeds to elect more pro-choice women.
“We appreciate Senator Casey’s pro-life votes – most recently, voting to provide health care to unwanted children who survive an abortion attempt,” said Kristen Day, the executive director of DFLA. “However, you cannot claim to be for something and then turn around and support a group that stands directly against those ideals.”
EMILY's List does not exist to support Democrats, but to support only abortion rights and exclusively female candidates who support abortion rights. DFLA exists to support pro-life Democrats, as Senator Casey has declared himself to be as recently as his last re-election in 2018 when we proudly supported his candidacy.
“We share the senator's support for electing more Democrats. But that can be done without compromising his pro-life position,” said Day. “We urge the senator to support and be a voice for pro-life candidates, who often find our party not very welcoming and are often told to change their position in exchange for support from the party.”
EMILY’s List would like to silence or eliminate the pro-life voice within the party and will target pro-life Democrats for defeat despite the eventual outcome that a non-Democrat could win the race.
- In 2017, then-frontrunner and pro-life Democrat Omaha mayoral candidate Heath Mello was pressured by abortion-rights groups to subvert his pro-life record. Mello was expected to win until abortion became a significant issue in the race. He lost to a pro-life Republican.
- The abortion lobby also helped flip the Nebraska 2 seat from blue to red when they helped oust Democratic incumbent Brad Ashford, who had a moderate record on abortion, with a pro-abortion-rights challenger. The Republican, Don Bacon, won the general.
- And EMILY’s List was part of an abortion-rights coalition that spent millions in an attempt to defeat incumbent veteran Congressman Dan Lipinski in 2018.
“EMILY’s List is exclusive and radical. At the end of the day, our party will suffer,” said Day. “If we, as a party, allowed members to be pro-life and vote that way, we could win more seats. We ask Senator Casey to help us with that message and to create an inclusive winning strategy.”
