Democrats For Life Praises Bipartisan Legislation to Make Birth Free

Fairfax, VA — Democrats for Life of America (DFLA) proudly endorses the Supporting Healthy Moms and Babies Act, a bipartisan proposal to eliminate out-of-pocket costs for prenatal, childbirth, and postpartum care. The organization commends Senators Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-MS), Tim Kaine (D-VA), Josh Hawley (R-MO), and Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) for their leadership on this transformative initiative.
“This is what it looks like when Washington puts people before politics,” said Kristen Day, Executive Director of DFLA.
“Both major parties can and must find common ground on the economic challenges of parenthood. For the good of the country, we must put aside our differences on abortion and unite to support parents. This legislation is a model for effective, compassionate governance.”
DFLA began advocating for reforms to reduce the cost of childbirth following a widely read 2022 Atlantic article by journalist Elizabeth Bruenig, who challenged the pro-life movement to “make birth free.”
DFLA Board Member Rabbi Craig Miller responded to that call by helping lead the 2023 white paper co-published with Americans United for Life: Make Birth Free: A Vision for Congress to Empower American Mothers, Families, and Communities.
“The Supporting Healthy Moms and Babies Act is a powerful step toward a culture where families are empowered, not burdened, by choosing life,” said John Mize, CEO of Americans United for Life. “This bipartisan bill affirms that our society values women, children, and the dignity of birth itself.”
DFLA Board Member Rabbi Craig Miller added, “I’m genuinely delighted to see this idea come to life. In today’s fractured political climate, it’s inspiring to witness real leadership address the pressing costs of childbirth. This bill supports families when they need it most.”
Catherine Glenn Foster, also a member of DFLA’s board, emphasized the stakes: “For too long, America has treated pregnancy as a private burden instead of a public good. No woman should fear hospital bills, debt, or discrimination simply for bringing a child into the world. These financial barriers are coercive and unjust. A just society offers compassion, not compulsion.”
