Thanks for the invitation you put out this week when you said that the Democratic Party needs to “let people in.” We know it’s been a busy campaign, so in case you forgot, here’s what you said:
“(The Democratic Party) can do the right thing and open its doors and welcome into the party people who are prepared to fight for real economic and social change. That is the Democratic Party I want to see, bringing in people who are willing to take on Wall Street, to take on corporate greed, and to take on a fossil fuel industry which is destroying this planet.”
Boy, is that us. We Pro-Life Democrats want to be back in our party. We want our political home again. We want to be let back into the Big Tent to make real, positive changes to this country. We’re concerned about health care. We want to see real economic opportunities that will strengthen families. We want to protect the environment for future generations. We want to move this country forward. We’re ready to fight as Democrats again, if you’ll let us come back home.
There are millions of Pro-Life Democrats. At least 21 million, as a matter of fact, and there are a heck of a lot more Pro-Life voters who would be willing to side with the Democrats if they thought that the issues most important to them could at least be part of the conversation. We could grow the party. You know this; you even said as much:
“Open the doors, let the people in, or the other option for the Democratic Party, which I see as a very sad and tragic option, is to choose to maintain its status quo structure, remain dependent on big money campaign contributions, and be a party with limited participation and limited energy and a party which, incredibly, is allowing a right-wing extremist Republican Party to capture the votes of a majority of working people in this country.”
You’re right. Without us, the Democratic Party will shrink. It already has shrunk. Since 2008, the party has lost 69 House seats, 13 Senate seats, 910 state legislative seats, 30 state legislative chambers, and 11 governorships.
However, there’s an opportunity to turn things around. The GOP is abandoning the Pro-Life movement. Their candidate has advocated for war crimes, he wants to drive down wages for families, and his statements on abortion are incoherent and confusing. Pro-Life voters are looking for a place to go. There’s a real opportunity to turn things around and build a progressive majority.
Let us back in. Let us help rebuild ourparty. Let us help make the future we can all be proud of.
