I Stand with Kirsten!

I Support Human Rights for All!

Several months ago, Kirsten Powers, USA Today Contributor, Daily Beast Columnist, and Fox News Contributor, bravely challenged the media on the “black out” of the Gosnell Trial.  Her column in USA Today, “Philadelphia abortion clinic horror” challenged the integrity of the news media and the “deafening silence” of coverage on the horrors of the abortion clinic.  Kirsten contrasted this “media blackout” with the “non-stop media hysteria” when Rush Limbaugh challenged Sandra Fluke over her birth control statement.

Mainstream media did begin lackluster coverage and several reports acknowledged the blackout due to abortion bias. Nonetheless, given the extremely gruesome and dangerous practices over a decade in the Philadelphia clinic one would expect more scrutiny. Gosnell was convicted, but the media failed to properly cover the story.  This was not about abortion, but the continued victimization of women and the failure to regulate an industry to protect the health and safety of women and children.

Kirsten Powers wrote,

“You don't have to oppose abortion rights to find late-term abortion abhorrent or to find the Gosnell trial eminently newsworthy. This is not about being "pro-choice" or "pro-life." It's about basic human rights. The deafening silence of too much of the media, once a force for justice in America, is a disgrace.”

Well, here we go again.

In Texas, a bill to ban abortion after 20 weeks passed the House and is set to pass the Senate. The Governor ordered the legislature to return for a special session after the Senate was prevented from passing the bill by pro-abortion activists who shouted profanities in the Senate chamber and who flagrantly disregarded the Senate rules.  Prior to the unruly behavior in the Senate Chambers, state senator Wendy Davis, led a 14-hour filibuster.  Her filibuster ended shortly before the midnight deadline which would have allowed time for a vote on the measure. The disrespectful behavior delayed the vote until after the midnight deadline had passed.

While speaking for 14 hours is a herculean effort, it was not ultimately her filibuster that led to the demise of the bill, it was the visitors in the Senate Chamber that thwarted the democratic process.

Yet State Senator Davis is being blindly being hailed as a hero for “standing up for women’s rights.”  Emily’s List praised the filibuster and said that the Senator prevented a bill that would have limited access to contraception.  That statement would only be true if one considered abortion as contraception.

Once again, Kirsten has stepped in to challenge those who are hailing this effort as heroic. In a recent article, “I don’t stand with Wendy Davis” she eloquently highlighted the hypocrisy of women praising Texas State Senator Wendy Davis for attempting to defeat a bill that would have banned abortion after 20 weeks, something that the public supports and that Kirsten eloquently described as a human rights issue.

Kirsten writes,

“Human-rights movements have traditionally existed to help the voiceless and those without agency gain progressively more rights. Yet in the case of abortion, the voiceless have progressively lost rights at the hands of people who claim to be human-rights crusaders. Abortion-rights leaders have
turned the world upside down.

They want us to believe that a grown woman is voiceless, that she has less agency than the infant in her womb who relies on her for life. A woman has so little agency, we are told, that she is incapable of getting an abortion before the fifth month of her pregnancy. To suggest she should do so is a “war on women.” It’s an insult to women dressed up as “women’s rights.”

While women’s groups continue to call Wendy Davis a hero for fighting to ban abortion after 20 weeks, I join Kirsten’s call to demand human rights for all.

Women should not be hailing Wendy Davis, they should listen to the words written by Kirsten Powers.  I don’t stand with Wendy Davis, but I will proudly stand with Kirsten Powers.  Will you join me?  Show your support for human rights for all by using #IstandwithKirsten and explain why you oppose late-term abortion and stand for life.
