DEMOCRATS URGE CUOMO TO KILL ABORTION EXPANSION BILL AND
RESTORE FUNDING TO SUPPORT PREGNANT WOMEN
New York Women Need More Support, Not More Abortions
Washington DC - A group of pro-life Democrats are urging Governor Andrew Cuomo to remove the abortion expansion language from the Women’s Equality bill and instead restore funding for the Maternity and Early Childhood Foundation, a non-profit organization that offers pre-natal support and support for new parents.
“New York has fewer restrictions on abortion than most states and almost double the national average rate for abortions,” said Kristen Day, Executive Director of Democrats For Life. “The abortion expansion measure will do nothing to help women, nor will the Governor’s support for unlimited public funding for abortion.”
The abortion expansion language would allow late-term abortions, allow non-doctors to perform abortions, and supersede any reasonable restrictions such as parental notification in a state that already has one of the highest abortion rates in the country. In addition, the Governor’s 2013-2014 budget proposed public funding for abortion with no cap on expenditures.
“Cuomo is carrying the agenda for a minority group of pro-abortion radicals instead of fighting to advance the fundamental rights of women,” said Day. “His message to low-income women is that New York will pay for your abortion, but if you want to carry your pregnancy to term, you are on your own.”
The Governor’s plan to zero out funding for the Maternity and Early Childhood Foundation will send more women to abortion clinics.
“Cuomo is ignoring the true needs of women,” said Kristen Day, Executive Director of Democrats For Life. “If he were addressing the real needs of women, his first stop would be New York City where abortions nearly outnumber live births. He might then realize that it is not access to abortion that women are lacking, it is support to carry their babies to term.”
