PRO-LIFE DEMOCRATS TO HOLD DINNER
Washington, D.C. (June 19, 2003) Democrats for Life of America (DFLA),
a national organization of pro-lfe Democrats, will hold its second
annual "Hall of Fame" dinner on Wednesday night, June 25, in
Washington, D.C.Carol Crossed, president of the organization, said that two Democratic members of Congress will be honored this year: Nebraska Senator Ben Nelson and Texas Representative Charles Stenholm. The dinner will be held starting at 6 p.m. at the Holiday Inn on the Hill, 415 New Jersey Avenue, Northwest.
"We instituted this annual event a year ago to focus attention on the growing pro-life movement among Democrats who believe that protection of the unborn is in accord with the Democratic party’s traditional concern for the most vulnerable. We honor public officials who have demonstrated that they share this concern," Ms Crossed said, "and encourage pro-life Democratic candidates to seek office."
Ms. Crossed said that last year’s mid-term elections and polls this year have indicated that substantial numbers of the electorate are unhappy with the abortion- endorsing stance of many Democratic officeholders, candidates and members of the party’s hierarchy. She noted that although the current party platform promises to respect differing views among party members on abortion, Democrats For Life has been unable to get its name posted on the "links" page of the Democratic National Committee’s Web site--which does list abortion-endorsing groups. A U.S. senator and 17 U.S. Representatives have written to the DNC asking that the DFLA "link’ be included.
