WASHINGTON, DC – Democrats For Life is proud to announce its endorsement of the following West Virginia pro-life legislators for their strong record in support of the Pain-Capable Child Protection Act (HB 4588) and their leadership to overturn the Governor’s veto:

  • Senator Bob Beach
  • Senator Donald Cookman
  • Senator Mike Green
  • Senaotr Roman Prezioso
  • Delegate Josh Barker
  • Delegate Denise Campbell
  • Delegate Jeff Eldridge
  • Delegate Dana Lyunch
  • Delegate Rick Moye
  • Senator Rocky Fitzsimmons
  • Senator Daniel Hall
  • Senator Larry Edgell
  • Delegate David Perry
  • Delegate Rupert Phillips
  • Delegate Peggy Smith
  • Delegate David Walker

“When Governor Earl Ray Tomblin vetoed the pro-life bill, that had overwhelming support in both the Senate and House of Delegates, these members refused to give up and demanded an opportunity for a veto override,” said Kristen Day, Executive Director of DFLA. “Partisan politics has no place in protecting the sanctity of life. These members recognize it, believe it and always put the protection of life first and foremost.”

Governor Tomblin vetoed the Pain-Capable Child Protection Act (HB 4588) without allowing the legislature the opportunity to override his veto.Conservatives salivated over this opportunity to smear pro-life Democrats in West Virginia with a “guilt by association” strategy and, by calling for new leadership, attempted to write a script to assist in a Republican takeover. Democrats control both the House of Delegates and the Senate. The legislation was proposed and supported by Democrats. Not a single Republican cosponsored the House bill. Nineteen of the twenty-nine votes in the Senate were Democratic. A majority of Delegates supported the bill.

“The pro-life Democrats we have endorsed are proud of the legislation and share my frustration that a self-avowed, pro-life Democrat would veto it. If pro-life voters in West Virginia buy into this guilt by association strategy and defeat these solidly pro-life legislators, the blood will be on Tomblin’s hands for not allowing the legislative process to takes its due course,” said Day. “However we believe West Virginia voters are too smart to fall for election-year smear tactics and will look at the proven pro-life records of these Members.”

Democrats For Life of America was founded in 1999 to mobilize Democrats at the local, state, and national levels. DFLA’s primary mission has been to elect pro-life Democrats, support pro-life elected officials, promote a pro-life plank in the Democratic Party platform, and achieve legislation that fosters respect for human life.
