WASHINGTION, DC – Democrats for Life of America—a national, non-profit group committed to fostering respect for life, from the beginning of life to natural death—announced today that it will host an East Coast Summit on September 27, 2014, to support its mission of protecting life and strengthening the “big tent” of the Democratic party.
“Our organization is holding this meeting to re-energize, re-ignite, and re-enforce our commitment to protecting life and to our inclusion in the big tent,” said Kristen Day, Executive Director of Democrats For Life of America. “There are 21 million pro-life Democrats in this country, and still, many are made to feel they cannot be Democrats because of their pro-life position.”
Polls indicate that a majority of Democrats support reasonable restrictions to abortion. A Gallup Poll indicated that 84% of Democrats support informed consent, 61% of Democrats support parental consent for minors seeking abortion, and 60% of Democrats support a 24-hour waiting period for women seeking abortion.
“Our members are proud to call themselves Democrats and support democratic values,” said Day. “Closing the doors to pro-life Democrats makes our party weaker, and we lose our majority status and our ability to help those who need assistance. DFLA wants to build a stronger, more inclusive party that can address poverty, hunger, and other issues that we cannot address if we are a minority party.”
Over the past several decades, the Democratic Party has slipped from a 292-seat majority in the U.S. House of Representatives in 1978 to only 199 Democratic seats today. The number of pro-life Democrats has dropped on a similar projection—110 in 1978 to only a handful today.
“We are committed to re-building a strong, inclusive Democratic Party,” said Day. “To do that, pro-life Democrats must play a critical role.”
The event will take place on September 27, 2014, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Endicott Estate in Dedham, Massachusetts.Pro-life Democrats will examine whether, after decades of marginalization how to make their place in the party.
Democrats for Life of America was founded in 1999 to mobilize Democrats at the local, state, and national levels. Its primary mission has been to elect pro-life Democrats, support pro-life elected officials, promote a pro-life plank in the Democratic party platform, and achieve legislation that fosters respect for human life.
