New York Pro-Life Democrats Urge Governor

to Support Women – Not Abortion Industry

Albany, NY – New York Pro-life Democrats held a press conference this week to oppose Governor Cuomo’s abortion expansion proposal and to call for more support for pregnant women and their unborn children, the codification of federal law, and a re-commitment to Democratic values that protect the weakest—even if they are unborn.

“Abortion is big business in New York with unlimited public funding and an abortion rate twice the national average,” said Kristen Day, Executive Director of Democrats For Life of America. “The Governor’s proposal will not address the high abortion rate nor help pregnant women. The Governor’s proposal will help an influential and financially flush corporation increase its customer base and profit margin; that sounds more like a Republican value.”

Governor Cuomo zeroed out funding for the sole organization that provides support for pregnant women in his budget. The funding was restored at a lower level only after pro-life democrats requested the restoration of funds. By contrast, the budget allows for unlimited funding of abortion through the Medicaid program. In 2011, New York tax dollars paid for 48,359 abortions. The average abortion costs $450, which would equal a minimum of  $21 million in public funding of abortion.

“We must remain true to Democratic Party principles and stop supporting the abortion industry. Instead, we should start supporting pregnant women,” said Carol Crossed, member of the Board of Directors for Democrats for Life of New York. “As Democrats, we advocate for peaceful solutions to problems facing the weakest in society: the poor, minorities, women, and children—even if they are yet to be born.”

The governor claims that his proposal would codify federal law, yet it allows public funding of abortion and removes a state statute that criminalizes an act of violence against a pregnant woman if her unborn child dies.

“Federal law currently prohibits public funding of abortion, protects conscience rights, and criminalizes an act of violence against a pregnant woman,” said DFL of New York member and attorney Joe Murphy.  "We would welcome an actual codification of those federal provisions."

Democrats For Life of America was founded in 1999 to mobilize Democrats at the local, state, and national levels. Its primary mission has been to organize pro-life Democrats, support pro-life elected officials, promote a pro-life plank in the Democratic Party platform and achieve legislation that fosters respect for human life. In addition to grassroots support across America, the group has federal and state elected officials who are actively promoting the group’s mission.
