People often misconstrue our position on pregnancy prevention because of our involvement in the Hobby Lobby case. Again, we would like to clarify that Democrats For Life does not oppose contraception.
Preventing pregnancy is an important part of reducing the abortion rate in America. There are several ways to address prevention. We support finding the most effective way to reduce unplanned pregnancies without violating ethical, religious, or personal beliefs. We cannot deny that abstinence is the only sure way to prevent pregnancy, but we also cannot turn our heads and pretend that our children are not engaging in risky behavior or the fact that contraception is not 100 percent effective.
The federal government has made a commitment to support prevention efforts and allocated a record $286.5 million in FY2014 for family planning under title X. The program provides access to contraceptive supplies and information to all who want and need them. A priority is given to low-income persons. Further, the Affordable Care Act mandates the availability of free contraceptives for health insurance plans.
We continue to promote more attention to support for pregnant women and families who, when faced with a crisis or planned pregnancy, deserve to have real options for healthy pregnancies and caring for the child. We will continue to advocate for a broader support network including affordable child care, a living wage, prenatal care, parenting classes, and all avenues toward supporting pregnant women, new parents, and families.
